I suspect that almost certainly the popular Carl Linnaeus' approach has been applied in the case of the "mushroom" photo, pertaining to the interpretation of the definition of a vegetable.
Of course you will no doubt already know that in his Systema Naturæ (1735), Linnaeus established the three kingdoms, namely Regnum Animale, Regnum Vegetabile and Regnum Lapideum.
Almost every child from the pre-'Pac-man' generations (and even a few since) will have played the classic parlour game '20 Questions' where the available 'Animal, Vegetable or Mineral' options would have instantly classed all fungi as being within the vegetable kingdom.
Even if by some misfortune you had never in your childhood had the opportunity to play the 20 questions game, I imagine you will have probably on many an evening since then relaxed in your drawing room with a glass of fine port or brandy, listening to the 'Major-General's Song' from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance'.
"I am the very model of a modern Major-General. I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral, I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical."
I am confident that the Major-General would have, without a moment of hesitation, reported mushroom based news along with any other vegetable related information.
Perhaps a round of 20 questions might be played at the next DICC meeting, any chance to ask "Is it bigger than the bread bin?", followed by "Is it something I can put in my mouth?" is sure to raise a smile or two.
Hi Steve
Thanks for the very informative ( as always ) post, of course theres no doubt that you realized the above comment about the " mushroom " photo was directed in jest ( as per the imicon ) at the person that submitted the photo, they were wondering if a mushroom would be classed as fungi and not as a vegetable by the voters and therefore would have been deemed off subject.
I hope the person that submitted the photo has also read your post and now feels happy with the photo they submitted. I wish I had of known more of this "Carl Linnaeus" character and his "Systema Naturæ (1735)" as i would of informed them of this compelling story when they voiced their concerns rather than teased them about it.
I do find it somewhat misfortunate never to have played " is it a vegetable " in my pre-pacman youth, as when im sitting on my patio glugging a beer or two whilst listening to the classics " us and them " and ' remember a day " by Pink Floyd i often ponder of years gone by and reminice of my childhood & teenage life, all i seem to remember playing on our housing estate were games like Germans & British, Cowboys & Indians, Hide & Seek, 1 2 3 bazooka, British Bulldog, Mummys & Daddys, Doctors & Nurses, Whats the time Mr Wolf, May I, Truth or Dare, Spin the Bottle and dare i say it Soggy Biscuit, I have to admit looking back now i feel as if ive missed out on some great fun & laughter.
In all fairness with my comment about the photo not being on subject and going on past experiences i was hoping for a box of button mushrooms, but never mind perhaps I'm not your type, i'll settle for a game of head and foot or whatever its called instead, maybe after a few beers and some photography talk you can explain the game and go first so i can understand the rules, you may have to go over it a few times, because as youre now aware i knew nothing of Carl Linnaeus and his Systema Naturæ on which this game is based.
Or perhaps we could play a game of soggy biscuit, one does presume you know how to play soggy biscuit..
Hope to see you thursday..
you can keep the soggy biscuit game - i dont wanna play thanks!
Bet you would all be up for playing doctors and nurses again tho ;-).
Have you ever played "soggy biscuit" Adam ? if not ill show you how to play on the dicc christmas party during the cheese and biscuits course, it will be the end of the night so won't be so bad when we get thrown out.
saying that you don't get digestives on a cheese board do you ?
I see voters are still not voting on all except their own. LOL
